MADACC Fido Field Trip Program

dog, pet, canine, leash, animal, fur, snout, nature, mammal, dog portrait, animal world

The Fido Field Trip Program allows approved community members to take an eligible MADACC dog out for a same-day “daycation”—a few hours of fresh air, enrichment, and connection—then return the dog to MADACC by the scheduled time. These outings help reduce kennel stress, provide real-world behavior insights, and increase adoption visibility.

Quick Program Basics

What is a Fido Field Trip?

A Fido Field Trip is a structured, same-day outing with a MADACC dog. You’ll pick up the dog, enjoy a few hours together (walks, relaxing, exploring dog-friendly places), and return the dog to MADACC by the designated time.

How long is a field trip?

Most outings are 4–8 hours. All dogs must be returned the same day by the scheduled return time.

Is this the same as fostering or adopting?

No. A field trip is temporary same-day custody. It’s not an adoption or long-term foster placement. If you fall in love (it happens!), we’ll help you take the next steps.

Eligibility & Sign-Up

Who can participate?

  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Must provide a valid government-issued ID
  • Must sign the Field Trip Agreement and follow program rules
  • Must have a working phone number and be reachable during the outing

Do I need experience with dogs?

Experience helps, but it’s not required for every dog. Our staff will match you with a dog that fits your comfort level.

Can families participate?

Yes, with an approved adult participant as the responsible handler. For safety, we may recommend certain dogs for adult-only outings.

Do I get to choose the dog I can take?

You may have a certain dog in mind you can certainly suggest it. Normally we choose the dogs that are here the longest.

Rules & Safety

What are the most important rules?

  • Return the dog on time (same-day only)
  • Leash required at all times (no off-leash areas)
  • No dog parks and no interactions with unknown dogs
  • Continuous supervision—do not leave the dog unattended
  • No transfers—the dog cannot be handed off to another person
  • No overnight stays

Can I take the dog to a restaurant patio or store?

Only to dog-friendly locations where dogs are permitted and the dog remains leashed and supervised. When in doubt, choose low-risk activities like a walk, a quiet park (leashed), or relaxing at home.

Can I take the dog to a dog park?

No. Dog parks and off-leash areas are prohibited for safety and liability reasons.

Can I bring the dog to meet my dog?

We strongly discourage meet-and-greets with personal pets during field trips. Many dogs do best without introducing unknown animals. If you’re interested in adopting and want a dog-to-dog meet, contact MADACC to schedule that safely.

Can I take the dog outside Milwaukee County or out of state?

NO! Field trips must remain within Milwaukee County only. If you have questions about travel distance, ask staff at pick-up.

Pick-Up, Supplies, and Return

What will MADACC provide?

  • Collar/tag and leash (and harness when needed)
  • Waste bags
  • Information sheet and tips for a successful outing
  • Optional: “Adopt Me” bandana and social media share guidance

What should I bring?

  • A photo ID
  • A charged phone
  • Credit card for deposit
  • A towel/blanket for your car seats (recommended)
  • Water and a portable bowl for longer outings (recommended)

What time do I have to return the dog?

Your return deadline will be listed on your Field Trip Agreement at checkout. Please plan to return at least 30 minutes before closing.

What if I’m running late?

Call MADACC as soon as you know you may be late. Communication is critical. Late returns may affect future participation.

Health, Behavior, and Emergencies

What if the dog gets sick or injured during the outing?

Call MADACC immediately for instructions. If it’s an emergency, seek immediate veterinary care and notify MADACC as soon as possible.

What if the dog slips the leash or gets loose?

Call MADACC immediately. Do not chase the dog—use calm, safe recovery steps and follow staff guidance.

What if the dog bites someone or another animal?

Call MADACC immediately and return the dog right away. Bite incidents may require a rabies quarantine per public health guidance. MADACC will provide next steps based on the situation and applicable municipal requirements.

Adoption & Sharing

Can I post photos and videos?

Yes! Sharing helps dogs get adopted. We’ll provide the dog’s name/ID and recommended captions. Please keep posts respectful and accurate.

What if I want to adopt the dog I took out?

Tell us when you return! We cannot blame you for falling in love! We’ll walk you through the adoption process and next steps.
